Some locations have uncertain origins, but may be linked to the slave trade or colonialism. Due to the uncertain nature of these historic connections in regard to locations including the name “Nelson”, we are not currently proposing to look at renaming these streets. However, if the local community express a strong desire to educate and inform people about their possible origins, we will explore ways of doing this. The provenance of these locations are difficult to provide certainty about.Burgoyne Road, SW9Uncertain name. May refer to General John Burgoyne, British officer. Burgoyne was an advocate for the abolition of slavery because he felt the slaves themselves would only side with the British in the American War of Independence if it was ended. However, his role in fighting the Colonial Army was viewed by many as a clear position against its ending.Cromwell Road, SW9Uncertain name. May refer to Oliver Cromwell and the Cromwell family, who were involved in slave trading and the suppression of rebellions in Barbados (as well as enabling the trading of Irish slaves).Dundas Road, SW9Uncertain name. May refer to Henry Dundas, MP (latterly Viscount Melville), who was Secretary of State for War during George III’s reign. There is much controversy around Dundas’ role in slavery: detractors claim that he was pro-slavery and tried to water down Wilberforce’s first motion to Parliament to abolish the trade. Others argue that his amendments enabled the Bill to pass and point to his votes in Parliament at that time in favour of abolition.Nelson’s Row, SW4Uncertain name. Could relate to Admiral Lord Nelson, who was involved in trading and defence/military actions. However, there are other more local possibilities.

Tulse Hill and Tulse Hill Ward are named after the Tulse family who held local manors in the early 17th-century.

Sir Henry Tulse was a later 17th-century descendant of the Tulse family who went on to become Lord Mayor of London. Much of his wealth came from profits from the slave trade.

Sir Henry, who went on to become Lord Mayor of London, earned much of his wealth from the slave trade. It is uncertain whether he owned the same local manors as the family he was descended from.One of Lambeth&#39;s electoral wards - the areas which councillors are elected to represent - was named Tulse Hill until 2021, when new ward names and boundaries developed by the independent Local Government Boundary Commission were approved. Much of the area previously known as Tulse Hill ward is now Brixton Rush Common.

A number of places in Lambeth are named after Henry Richard Vassall-Fox 3rd Baron Holland of Foxley and his wife Elizabeth Webster, nee Vassal, who owned slaves and were compensated after the abolition of slavery for their slaves and plantations in Jamaica. Together they owned the Holland estate in Brixton.

One of Lambeth&#39;s electoral wards - the areas which councillors are elected to represent - was named Vassal ward until 2021, when new ward names and boundaries developed by the independent Local Government Boundary Commission were approved. In Lambeth, we have a long and important history as a place where people from all over the world have chosen to make home. We are one of the most diverse boroughs in London, which we are proud to celebrate, including through buildings, place names and memorials to the people who&#39;ve contributed to our borough. In the 1980s, many council offices were renamed after African and Caribbean figures, including Olive Morris, Paul Robeson and Nelson Mandela, but of which only the Mary Seacole Centre survives today. Newer street names include those on the Heath Road estate named after Black British athletes in the 1984 Olympics and Black writers and poets commemorated in side streets along Shakespeare Road.
